PROJECT OBJECTIVES
How can the Google AIY Voice Kit, help leverage accessibility for CUNY students who have disabilities while in the classroom?
THE PROBLEM
Concentrating
Taking Notes
Multi-tasking
Organization
Understanding
OUR SOLUTION
The Google TA, a collection of apps to help students with disabilities access the notes, transcripts and recordings during their University lectures, automatically get reminders of scheduled events pertaining to their lectures and arrange study meetups with other students.
HOW MIGHT WE
How might we empower users to easily plan and organize a vacation schedule using this tool on their mobile device?

INSIGHTS
Ashia has ADHD and spoke to us of how hard it is to concentrate and to stay in the moment long enough to take notes and listen to the lecture in and during the classroom time. She struggles with concentration, time management, taking notes, and staying consistent with goals or planners
Sam has multiple disabilities spoke to us of his having to multitask while in class.
He struggles with simultaneously listening to a lecture and taking notes.
The biggest challenge was in maintaining lecture concentration, being able to take notes, and following up on scheduling class homework, tests and events.
PERSONAS

RESEARCH FINDINGS
Our CUNY Students Story?
We interviewed two of our Student Influencers about their lives in the classroom and the challenges and opportunities in simply going to class and learning in a “traditional” college lecture
WHAT OUR STUDENTS TOLD US THEY WANTED
Their biggest challenge was in maintaining lecture concentration being able to take notes and following up on scheduling class homework and tests etc.
We believe this to be our biggest opportunity for Ashia and Sam, and ultimately for all students.
Based on our team’s research, and our interviewing Sam and Aisha, we learned that removing the need for Sam and Aisha to record and transcribe class notes, while in class, were the major headaches to effectively learning
Our team troubleshooted this challenge and came up with a solution based on their experience while inside and outside the classroom.
SURVEYS
We didn’t survey our user. We did research on their disabilities, current accessibility apps, and ways in which classrooms can become more helpful to students.
We found that the CUNY University student body is approximately the same as a cross-section of the NYC working class population in age, gender, race and income.
This research was conducted to gather more information on the users’ pain points within the parameters of the current project and to find more information on our interview subjects’ disabilities.
12 questions were asked.
2 people were interviewed during the hackathon.
COMPETITIVE RESEARCH
There are note-taking, recording, and scheduling apps already on the market—Google Live Transcribe, Sonocent Audio Notetaker, Google Slides, Gmail, Scheduling Apps, and Calendar apps—which the students already use to certain degrees. Google currently provides some of these applications within their Google Suite. Our students also already use personal email accounts as well as many of the Google Suite of applications. Integrating with these applications is key to the success of our solution
USER SCENARIO

USER JOURNEY

GROUP PRESENTATION
During the hackathon, we were to present our research, insight and solution in front of the entire group. We were to show how we arrived at the problem to be solved, what insights were made after our research and interviews, and why we chose our solution for our students.

INITIAL UI DESIGN FROM THE GROUP PRESENTATION
During the CUNY Grow with Google hackathon, we assigned ourselves tasks in order to get all of the team's work done for our project. My role was to create the presentation and be one of the members to present it to the audience. Another team member created the storyboard slides with the initial UI design. After we won our hackathon, and here for the presentation of this portfolio project, I redesigned the UI screens specifically for this portfolio.
FUTURE STEPS
Implementing the team's solution and user testing to determine the viability of the software, hardware, and that the user's need is being met.
